In the same kind of way you let people choose what they get emails for use the same kind of forms to let us choose who can view anything on the left side of our profile (i.e. the large picture, text about us and posting comment) and our description (which would change from "Toby is a 16 year-old guy living in Cornwall and has been a memeber for almost a year" to "Toby has been a member for almost a year.")
By "who can view" I don't mean making permissions for each individual user, options like "Allow Everyone" "No-one" or "Allow Friends" would suffice.
This way people could still see our games, achievements, friends and then put a "This person has blocked their profile to non-friends. Click here to add them" text at the top.
I wouldn't use this but I know quite a few people would. ;)
Obviously admins would see everything anyways

just posing arguments to flesh out the idea:
Posted 2 months agowouldn't your friends already know your profile information?
isn't the point of a profile to introduce yourself to people passively?
if both of those are true and don't want non-friends to know information, then it stands to reason that you just refrain from putting it there in the first place yes?
to me this just seems like it would further escalate the friend begging of "plz add meee" since there is now a reward for "friendship" status.
