Clicking on a thread will now take you to the last message or the first unread.
you mean buttons like [home] and [end]? [pgup] [pgdn]?
Posted 8 months agoWorks, but a link to the top of the page would be cool.
Posted 8 months agowhat benefit does a link offer over an integrated interface object?
Posted 8 months agoScroll to the bottom to see what I am talking about.
Posted 8 months agosorry, i'm from a time before the mouse. i shift tab to get to the bottom of the page. why keep switching input devices when you don't have to?
also if you look at fitt's law you'll see it's actually easier to grab a scrollbar than it is to click a link, as the scrollbar has an infinite target to hit.

also, if i must use my mouse, scrollwheel is easier than moving the mouse to find a small three letter link.
Most people do use a mouse though, and if you go to say the bottom of Mccrunchnut's profile, you will realise how far down you are from the top buttons, so therefore the ability to just click on a button to take you straight to the top would be much quicker.
The same goes for the email threads. I have some threads that are 50 or 60 comments long, and it takes ages to get to the last comment.
how long is ages? .1 seconds?
i still don't see how [pgdown][pgup][home][end] aren't faster.
with the exception of amiathena's comment below about a laptop where there may not be those keys or an external mouse.
even with a trackpad clicking on the scrollbar is easier than hitting a three-letter link in the middle of the screen, because of the results of fitts's law.
While I can concede that it may be more ingrained in some users to use a mouse, or look for a 'top' link, i fail to see how it would be quicker or better user interface design.
possible alternatives that already exist and work perfectly well : [pgup], [pgdwn], [home], [end], scrollwheel, [tab] (or hold down tab), [shift+tab] to go to the bottom of the page, for singlepoint trackpad -> put one finger on the top, another on the bottom, and then release the first finger. this creates a fast scroll.
i had something else, but i lost my train of though, but that's ok... got a little rambley there _
My enquiry was based on most websites you go to, for products, have a top button at the bottom of the screen.
I must admit I am enjoying the amount of interest this topic has raised. Even conceding that you may well be correct, I believe that if people were given the option, they would go for the link.
Laptop.
Posted 8 months agoalso... how did this get 668 + votes in three hours?? i didn't even think that many people bothered to read the feedback, let alone on a friday night.

I am so totally agreeing with The internet here, there are much better options for going to the top or bottom of the page than with a link.
The suggestion to have a link that takes you to the first new message in a thread is good, though.
best idea i have read in awhile!
Posted 7 months agoOk, This link?

Very good idea, would be very convenient too. Saves all the hassle of scrolling up and down, up and down... getting dizzy from all the text that rushes past. X_x
