XP can decrease
After getting some achievements, your public profile page will update the xp bar. If you open your Home page, the xp won't get updated. If you refresh your public profile page, the xp bar can drop.

I found out this can happen if you rate a game before your home page has a chance to update the xp. Everything you gained in between is lost although you still get the xp from rating the game.
