Whenever I go into a dead chat room and see a message there, I don't know if it was sent 2 hours ago, or 2 seconds ago.

Maybe optional timestamps, like, no timestamps, "last message sent" timestamp, or all timestamps

I like the options idea. I like being able to see the time line of chat, but also hate having to read a string of numbers before the names. Options ftw!

maybe you could just put on a really weird or random comment like I LIKE CHEESEY CARROTS ON A STICK OF CHOCOLATE TUNA!!!! and you would know if the people had left or not by seeing if nothing happened OR someone had said: YOU NEED HELP!!!
